Blue-green algae in Alberta is under constant observation by researchers, and a new website now enables the public to track it regardless of their location. The Algal Bloom Tracker allows users to monitor toxic algal blooms at six lakes using satellite imagery and lake sampling. This website offers near real-time results displayed on a user-friendly map.

Rolf Vinebrooke, a key researcher in this project and an aquatic ecology professor at the University of Alberta, explained that the map is regularly updated through satellite images capturing the lakes’ conditions. This technology provides a comprehensive view of the entire lake, helping individuals identify the nature of the bloom and avoid affected areas.

Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, can flourish in nutrient-rich Alberta lakes during the summer, forming distinctive green scum that poses health risks. Some algal blooms produce toxins harmful to the liver and nervous system if ingested.

The Algal Bloom Tracker website allows visitors to check if a lake has experienced recent blooms before planning recreational activities. Currently operational for six lakes, including Ethel Lake, Lac La Biche, Nakamun Lake, Pigeon Lake, Sylvan Lake, and Wabamun Lake, the tracker aims to expand to approximately 50 lakes across Alberta within the next three years.

When excessive blue-green algae levels are detected, Alberta Health Services issues health advisories for affected lakes. Presently, over 25 advisories are in effect across the province, cautioning people to avoid contact with blooms and lake water.

The Algal Bloom Tracker operates independently from AHS, acting as a tool for public awareness and precaution. Vinebrooke emphasized the importance of following health advisories due to the dynamic nature of algal blooms. While bloom intensities have increased since 2000, the year-to-year variance and unpredictability have become more pronounced.

The project’s website also seeks to enhance understanding of algal blooms, as they impact various aspects such as recreation, tourism, real estate, and Indigenous communities in Alberta. Being informed about harmful algal blooms occurrence is crucial for scientists, policymakers, residents, and recreational lake users alike.
