SportsSnooker Icon John Virgo Dies at 79

Snooker legend John Virgo’s passing has been attributed to a ruptured aorta, as per reports following his sudden demise at the age of 79. The snooker community and beyond have been offering heartfelt tributes to the former star, who achieved significant success in the sport during the 1970s and 1980s by clinching the 1979 UK Championship title and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in the same year.

Virgo gained widespread recognition in the 1990s for his role as co-host of the popular television show, Big Break, alongside comedian Jim Davidson. Known as the voice of snooker, he enjoyed a remarkable career as a commentator on the BBC, with his famous catchphrase “where’s the cue ball going?” becoming synonymous with his broadcasting style.

Residing in Spain with his wife Rosie, Virgo’s wife expressed her deep sorrow shortly after his passing, highlighting their close bond over the years. Among those grieving his loss is his close friend James Malyon, who shared fond memories of their time together, including playing golf and socializing with the couple.

Renowned snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan, who considered Virgo a lifelong friend, expressed his devastation over the news, while fellow commentator Stephen Hendry also paid tribute to Virgo’s exceptional talent and vibrant personality. Additionally, Jim Davidson, Virgo’s former colleague on Big Break, honored his memory, acknowledging Virgo’s unique character and contributions to the snooker community.

In 2020, Virgo and his wife relocated to Spain in pursuit of a more comfortable environment to alleviate Virgo’s chronic neck pain. Survived by his son Gary and daughter Brook-Leah from previous marriages, Virgo leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of snooker.
