In the aftermath of a lackluster Christmas season, a prominent supermarket is considering over 150 job cuts. Asda is aiming to reduce expenses and simplify its management structure following a disappointing holiday performance, which has led to challenges in retaining market share.

The festive sales at Asda declined by 4.2% this year, resulting in a market share decrease to 11.4% in the 12 weeks leading up to December 28, marking a significant drop over previous years. Consequently, the company is proposing to eliminate more than 80 management positions and potentially impact several warehouse employees.

While Asda grapples with these changes, other major retailers like Tesco and Sainsbury’s experienced sales growth during the Christmas period. The exact number of job losses at Asda is yet to be confirmed, but discussions on redundancies are ongoing, as reported by GMB news. The trade union GMB is actively supporting its members through collective consultations and individual meetings at distribution centers and depots.

As part of the restructuring plans, Asda is considering setting up regional hubs for transport operations and involving Evri in parcel-handling processes to cope with the demand. The company spokesperson emphasized that these initiatives are aimed at enhancing operational efficiency by streamlining tasks, increasing regional flexibility, standardizing work procedures, and reducing reliance on external support.

In an internal communication obtained by the Telegraph, Asda executives informed employees about the need for fewer regional managers due to consolidating sub-regions. The company acknowledged the challenges of change and expressed regret over the necessity to part ways with some colleagues.

Asda, positioned as the third largest supermarket chain in the UK, faced backlash previously for dismissing nearly 500 employees in November without prior consultation.
