John Virgo, a renowned snooker commentator, has passed away at the age of 79. He was recognized as a prominent figure in the sport and recently concluded his commentary duties for the BBC during the Masters tournament. Virgo, originally from Salford, achieved success as a player by winning the UK Championship in 1979. His demise occurred in Spain where he resided.

The sad news was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis, who expressed his sorrow over the loss of the beloved commentator. Virgo’s dedication to snooker and his engaging commentary style endeared him to fans and players alike.

Following his passing, tributes poured in from the snooker community. Ronnie O’Sullivan, a fellow snooker icon, expressed his grief over losing a close friend in Virgo. Colleagues like Stephen Hendry and Shaun Murphy also shared their heartfelt messages, highlighting Virgo’s impact on the sport.

Virgo retired from playing in 1994 and transitioned into a legendary commentator, known for his iconic catchphrase “Where’s the cue ball going?” His contributions to snooker were further recognized when he was inducted into the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. Additionally, his vibrant personality, flamboyant waistcoats, and trick shots added to his enduring legacy.

Apart from his snooker career, Virgo was a familiar face on the BBC’s snooker program, “Big Break,” alongside Jim Davidson. Davidson, in his tribute, praised Virgo’s talent and the joy he brought to many through their collaboration on the show.

In recent years, Virgo had relocated to Spain with his wife, Rosie Ries, seeking relief from a long-standing neck injury. Despite his challenges, Virgo’s enthusiasm for snooker never wavered, leaving a lasting impact on the sport and its community.
