NASA WB-57 Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing in Houston

NationalNASA WB-57 Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing in Houston

An aircraft operated by NASA made an emergency landing at Ellington Field Airport in Houston, Texas, causing sparks to fly as it skidded along the runway. The WB-57 high-altitude research plane encountered a mechanical issue, leading to a “gear-up landing,” as confirmed by NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Bethany Stevens reassured the public via social media that all crew members were safe and that NASA would conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Videos shared by local channel KHOU 11 captured the aircraft sliding on its belly, emitting sparks, and eventually coming to a halt. Emergency crews assisted one of the pilots in exiting the cockpit, with reports indicating that two pilots were onboard during the incident.

Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, disclosed that the aircraft experienced difficulties upon landing on Runway 17R-35L at Ellington Airport, prompting a response from first responders. The runway remained closed until the aircraft could be cleared from the scene.

The cause of the landing gear failure is yet to be determined. The WB-57, a long-range aircraft under NASA’s Johnson Space Center, is capable of extended flights at altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet and can carry payloads of up to 8,800 lbs. Ellington Airport, where three WB-57 aircraft are stationed, serves as a hub for military, NASA, and general aviation activities.
