Novel writer Rachel Reid from Nova Scotia has contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library to prevent the closure of five branches. Reid stated in an interview with CBC News that she felt compelled to support the libraries to utilize her success for a good cause. The library board had sought additional funding from municipalities to keep branches in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton operational until the 2026-27 fiscal year. Despite partial funding commitments, there was a shortfall of over $200,000.
The library’s CEO, Julia Merritt, expressed gratitude for Reid’s generous donation, emphasizing that it will cover staffing costs for the branches. Merritt mentioned that the contribution ensures the five branches can remain open until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Reid emphasized the vital role libraries played in her journey as an author and community member, stressing the importance of adequate funding for such essential services.
Reid’s donation, acknowledged as one of the largest private contributions in the library’s history, will help sustain library operations. While recognizing the significance of private support, the library emphasized the ongoing need for stable public funding and strong partnerships for long-term sustainability. Nova Scotia’s Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage praised Reid’s donation and reiterated its commitment to working with the library to establish a sustainable operating model.
The department highlighted its annual operating support to public libraries and additional funding provided this year. Reid will participate in a public event celebrating libraries next month. The library and government aim to ensure continued access to vibrant public libraries across the region. Merritt underscored the importance of revising the funding formula for Nova Scotia libraries to ensure long-term viability.
