“Markham Hosts NTT IndyCar Series Debut Race Weekend”

Sports"Markham Hosts NTT IndyCar Series Debut Race Weekend"

Markham is revving up for a weekend filled with motorsports excitement as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, including the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. This marks the first time the race will be held outside of Toronto, featuring a brand-new track layout spanning 3.52 kilometers with 12 unique turns.

Attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407 to access the event. Additional GO Transit services will be provided, facilitating travel to and from the track for spectators. Moreover, increased York Region Transit availability and shuttle services from designated parking lots to the event grounds are being offered.

Residents of Markham have been enduring the effects of track construction, with various road closures in place to accommodate the racing event. These closures will remain in effect until Monday morning, with some roads undergoing restrictions until track teardown on August 27.

The main event on Sunday features IndyCar racing, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points standings and favored to win. Other notable drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also be competing in support series races.

Drivers have noted the unique challenges of the Markham track, emphasizing its newly repaved and smooth surface, contrasting with the rough roads of Toronto. Tickets for the weekend races are available for purchase, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday, with donations encouraged for Make-A-Wish Canada.
