Carley Fortune, a renowned author in the romance genre, has unveiled that her upcoming novel, “Only in Summer,” is scheduled for release on May 18, 2027. The novel is a return to the familiar setting of Barry’s Bay, Ont., previously featured in her works “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” as well as her childhood hometown.
In a recent newsletter announcement, Fortune shared her excitement about owning a cottage near Barry’s Bay, fulfilling a long-held dream since the sale of her family’s lakeside home. The protagonist of “Only in Summer,” Eleanor Florek, also shares a similar aspiration. Known as Ellie, she is the cousin of Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s earlier Barry’s Bay novels, longing to acquire property in her hometown. Ellie’s plans take an unexpected turn when a neighboring house is demolished for a lavish new construction, sparking potential romantic entanglements against the scenic backdrop of the lakeside setting.
Fortune, a Toronto-based writer and former editor at Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life, has a notable literary portfolio including “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.” The latter book achieved recognition as a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024, championed by fashion influencer Mirian Njoh, marking a significant milestone for romance novels on the show.
Moreover, “Every Summer After” transitioned into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” which garnered success and renewal for a second season based on “One Golden Summer.” In a similar vein, Netflix Canada is in the process of adapting “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode series, expanding the reach of Fortune’s literary universe.
