The debut Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback on the starting line. Practice and qualifying on the first day of the only IndyCar event in Canada were called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, leading officials to postpone the final safety inspection. The event, relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after being held there since 1986, faced delays in track completion.
Expressing disappointment, IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles mentioned the challenges faced by the promoters despite support from the onsite team. The shift to Markham, a first-time host for the event, attracted a significant number of spectators, showcasing the market’s enthusiasm for the sport.
Local attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo, who have been loyal to the race for two decades, acknowledged the importance of safety but expressed mixed feelings about the postponement. They highlighted the significance of on-track activities in engaging fans and generating interest in the region.
The decision to relocate the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham last September. The new circuit, constructed for the first time, spans Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Notable incomplete features included a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing adjustments for marshals.
Despite the setbacks, the event received substantial investments from the Ontario and federal governments, as well as the city of Markham. The total capital spending for the race, including infrastructure upgrades, exceeded $12 million, as confirmed by Mayor Frank Scarpitti. Spectators enjoyed free entry on Fridays, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
While challenges like limited shade and seating were noted by attendees like Stobo, off-track activities proceeded as scheduled on Friday. Saturday’s schedule was adjusted to accommodate all missed sessions, with organizers optimistic about the circuit’s potential for an exciting race day on Sunday.
In addition to IndyCar, other races such as the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series were set to take place over the weekend. Despite the delays and inconveniences, fans and participants anticipated a thrilling event in Markham.
