Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community located in the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident was reported to police on Wednesday afternoon when the children were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station.
Family members discovered the toddlers in a nearby lake, and First Nation safety officers transported them to the nursing station, where they were later pronounced dead. Authorities believe the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake, with no suspicion of foul play.
Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin representing the Island Lake region’s First Nations, including Garden Hill, expressed deep sorrow for the loss. The community is offering support to the grieving family during this difficult time.
Despite efforts to prevent such accidents, including the installation of a protective fence around the water, the heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock and disbelief. Garden Hill is situated approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
The tragic incident adds to the five drowning deaths recorded in Manitoba in 2026, as reported by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito highlighted the challenges of water-related incidents in the region, emphasizing the need for ongoing support for affected families.
Expressing sympathy for the family and community, Sgt. Hipolito acknowledged the emotional toll of such events and assured that RCMP would provide necessary assistance to help them cope and heal.
