“Sikh Canadian Activist Receives ‘Duty to Warn’ Letter”

Updates"Sikh Canadian Activist Receives 'Duty to Warn' Letter"

Another Sikh Canadian activist has received a “duty to warn” letter, raising doubts about the Carney government’s claims regarding Indian government foreign interference and transnational repression. Inderjeet Singh Gosal disclosed that he was contacted by the RCMP and handed the letter on August 14 in Caledon, Ontario.

These letters are issued by the police when there is credible intelligence indicating a threat to a citizen’s life. Gosal shared with CBC News that he was informed about a threat on his life and was requested to meet immediately to receive the warning in writing.

The letter, signed by two RCMP members and Gosal, mentioned a previous offer to enroll him in a witness protection program, which he declined, expressing his commitment to campaigning for the Khalistan referendum rather than accepting protection.

Khalistan refers to the proposed independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab region. The Sikh separatists’ non-binding referendums conducted by the Sikhs for Justice group in various international communities have sparked tensions with the Indian government.

Following the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023, Gosal was appointed to lead the Canadian referendum campaign. This recent warning marks his sixth official police notice since assuming his new role.

The duty to warn letters have been ongoing since the Carney government initiated discussions with the Modi government, amidst strained relations between Canada and India. Despite efforts to normalize relations and focus on economic ties, these warnings persist, indicating ongoing threats.

Canada has faced scrutiny from UN rapporteurs regarding the protection of Sikh activists, highlighting concerns about Indian government threats. Gosal appreciates the RCMP’s efforts in notifying him about the threats but criticizes the Carney government’s approach.

As Canada navigates these challenges, Gosal remains resolute in his commitment to the upcoming referendum, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes despite external pressures. India has denied involvement in violent acts in Canada, including the Nijjar incident.

Gosal reaffirms his dedication to the referendum scheduled for October 18 in Edmonton, Alberta, despite being a potential target for transnational repression efforts by the Indian government.
