Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who was reported missing following the devastating floods in Nepal’s border region with China has been located safe. The individual had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash floods occurred a week ago when a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China. The natural disaster resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, with over 1,100 fatalities and more than 3,900 individuals still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has reported that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are among the missing.
In response to the crisis, Canada is taking action by dispatching over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region. Additionally, Ottawa has already committed $5 million in humanitarian assistance to support the relief efforts in the flood-affected area.
