“UK Phone Users Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Transition”

Tech"UK Phone Users Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Transition"

A significant change is approaching for phone users in the UK, urging homeowners to take action before an imminent deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long facilitated communication are being phased out in favor of a new technology known as Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.

This transition is not only necessary to keep up with modern requirements but also promises enhanced reliability and introduces new functionalities like clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Set to take effect from January 2027, the major overhaul is prompting BT to launch a campaign, fronted by Clare Balding, under the slogan ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ aimed at prompting households to check their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.

This initiative coincides with recent research revealing a tendency among Brits to procrastinate on essential tasks, often assuming that functional services do not require immediate attention.

Clare Balding emphasized the importance of acting promptly upon receiving notifications from service providers to prevent potential disruptions to essential connections. BT assures customers that they are not alone in this transition and will provide guidance every step of the way.

Customers are assured that they will likely retain their phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain consistent, with no anticipated increases in bills during the migration process. In most cases, no engineer visits will be necessary, as households can simply connect their existing phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional wall sockets.

However, some exceptions may occur, and if issues persist, contacting the provider may be necessary to facilitate a smooth transition.

BT’s Consumer Digital Voice Director, Lucy Baker, stressed the importance of heeding messages from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential services. The shift to digital landlines is deemed a significant, once-in-a-generation upgrade to the country’s communication infrastructure, ensuring more reliable and secure technology for all.

Customers with specific needs, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, are advised to inform their providers promptly to receive appropriate support during the transition.

Digital Voice, BT’s modern home phone service, operates through broadband technology instead of copper wires, offering advanced features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile devices. The service aims to eliminate issues like crackling during calls and improve call quality, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.

For most households, the shift to Digital Voice will not alter their phone usage habits. The cost of the new service is bundled with broadband charges in a single package price, with no additional fees for Digital Voice services.
