The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics torch relay is set to kick off in Atlanta, the location of the previous U.S. Summer Games in 1996, and traverse through all 50 states, as per an announcement made by organizers on Tuesday. The Olympic flame will be ignited in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, before commencing its cross-country journey in spring 2028. The detailed route for the torch relay will be revealed in 2027.

According to LA28 organizers, this torch relay is anticipated to be one of the most extensive in Olympic history, encompassing renowned landmarks and hosting festival celebrations in various cities nationwide. Casey Wasserman, the chair and president of LA28, expressed that the journey of the flame to Los Angeles is a privilege that will be shared with every part of the country, with individuals from all 50 states carrying the flame towards the Opening Ceremony.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens conveyed their city’s pride in welcoming back the Olympic flame after 32 years since hosting the centennial Summer Games. Dickens emphasized Atlanta’s growth and international connections, stating that the city is prepared to receive the flame from Greece, unite in celebrating the Games’ spirit, and pass it forward towards Los Angeles to continue America’s Olympic legacy.

The Paralympic torch relay will follow the conclusion of the Olympics in August 2028, commencing in Stoke Mandeville, England, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. The starting location for the U.S. leg of the relay will be disclosed later. Both torch relays will be backed by sponsors including Coca-Cola, JPMorganChase, Allstate, and Xfinity.
