Shabana Mahmood is set to introduce a new initiative tomorrow that aims to establish a specialized law enforcement agency in the UK, often referred to as the “British FBI.” This task force will concentrate on combatting serious crimes such as fraud and terrorism.
The Home Secretary will reveal plans for a cutting-edge police force designed to target the most dangerous criminals in the country. The rationale behind this move is the perceived strain on the existing 43 police forces in England and Wales, as they struggle to combat both national and international criminal networks.
The proposed National Police Service will enable chief constables to focus on local criminal activities like anti-social behavior, drug trafficking, and theft. Additionally, the reforms will introduce Regional Crime Hubs to pursue criminals engaged in cross-border operations and complex criminal activities.
Shabana Mahmood emphasized the need for a modernized approach to policing, highlighting the inadequacy of the current system in dealing with sophisticated crimes like cyber fraud and organized crime. The establishment of the National Police Service, equipped with top-tier talent and advanced technology, aims to enhance the efficiency of law enforcement efforts at a national level.
The new bureau, as per the Home Office, will amalgamate the capabilities of various law enforcement entities, including the National Crime Agency and Counter Terrorism Policing, to address complex criminal activities effectively. A National Police Commissioner will lead this force, assuming the role of the highest-ranking police officer in the country.
Former head of counter-terrorism policing, Neil Basu, expressed support for the initiative, citing the necessity of integrating multiple agencies and resources for a more cohesive response to major crimes, organized crime, and terrorism.
Shabana Mahmood will highlight the fragmented nature of current policing arrangements, where different police forces are responsible for various specialized tasks. The proposed restructuring will consolidate these responsibilities under the new organization, ensuring optimized use of technologies like facial recognition systems across all police forces.
The Home Secretary is scheduled to present her comprehensive strategy for crime prevention on Monday, positioning it as the most significant reform since the inception of the police service two centuries ago.
