Tech"Which? Report: Small Mobile Networks Outshine Major Players"

A recent report by consumer group Which? has revealed that the major mobile networks in the UK, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling behind smaller competitors in terms of overall performance. After surveying over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, the study found that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

The report aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. Results showed that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing many smaller rivals. Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, with EE performing the best among the major providers, ranking ninth.

One of the key findings highlighted in the report was the significant price difference between the Big Four and smaller networks. Customers on the major networks paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users on smaller networks paid only £9 on average. Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often utilize the major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring comparable signal strength and service quality.

Switching between networks was also flagged as an easy process, with some customers able to change providers in as little as 10 minutes. One consumer shared their positive experience of switching from O2 to SMARTY, reducing their monthly bill significantly.

Natalie Hitchins, Which?’s Head of Home Products and Services, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers approaching the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers that offer greater value.

The rankings from Which? include Talkmobile at 83%, Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff at 79%, SMARTY at 79%, and other networks scoring lower. This data underscores the growing competitiveness of smaller mobile providers in the UK market.
