“Wales and Scotland Issued Avalanche Warnings Amid Heavy Snowfall”

Updates"Wales and Scotland Issued Avalanche Warnings Amid Heavy Snowfall"

Hikers have received a caution about potential avalanches while climbing a well-known mountain due to heavy snowfall in the region.

A warning has been issued for Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, as unstable snow conditions have raised concerns of significant falls and localized avalanches. This alert was issued by the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team following the arrival of Storm Goretti.

In Scotland, six areas are under a “considerable” avalanche risk due to the current heavy snowfall and Arctic weather conditions. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service has identified potential risks in Creag Meagaidh, Glencoe, Lochaher, North Cairngorms, South Cairngorms, and Torridon.

The service highlighted that natural avalanches, including large and very large ones, are possible, with even a single person load likely to trigger an avalanche on steep slopes.

Recent incidents on the A4086 Pen-y-Pass at Yr Wyddfa showcased the rush of visitors seeking winter scenery, leading to chaotic scenes in the area.

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team cautioned that many paths on Snowdon are obscured by snow, particularly the higher sections of the Llanberis Path which are deemed hazardous. Other popular routes like the Pyg Track were also reported to have unstable snow conditions.

The team emphasized the presence of unstable snow areas and the formation of cornices near the mountain peak, which could collapse unexpectedly, potentially causing falls or localized avalanches.

Despite the allure of fresh snow, venturing into the Snowdonia mountains during winter carries risks, according to Llanberis MRT. Volunteer Elfyn Jones stressed the importance of experience, strong navigation skills, and understanding snow behavior in such conditions. Proper winter equipment, including crampons and an ice axe, is crucial for safety.

In anticipation of Storm Goretti’s impact, a “weather bomb” is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds across the UK. The Met Office has issued warnings for snow, wind, rain, and ice, anticipating disruptions and hazardous travel conditions.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong warned of the multi-hazard nature of the storm, with significant snowfall expected in Wales and the Midlands and strong winds in the far South West. An amber warning was issued for potential disruption on Thursday night into Friday morning.

The storm’s rapid pressure drop is set to create a weather bomb, characterized by strong winds capable of causing damage to structures and trees.
