“UK’s Badenoch Criticized Over Abramovich Ties Amid Ukraine Aid Dispute”

Politics"UK's Badenoch Criticized Over Abramovich Ties Amid Ukraine Aid Dispute"

A prominent Conservative member, Kemi Badenoch, is facing criticism for her association with Roman Abramovich instead of providing counsel on matters concerning Russia and Ukraine. The controversy arose after it was revealed that shadow attorney general Lord Wolfson was representing the oligarch in a legal dispute in Jersey, where the government is investigating over £5.3 billion in assets linked to Abramovich. The UK government is urging Abramovich to release £2.5 billion of frozen funds to support Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.

During a session of PMQs, opposition leader Keir Starmer accused Badenoch of lacking judgment and leadership in the situation. The Conservative Party later stated that Lord Wolfson had withdrawn from offering legal advice on Russian and Ukrainian matters.

Labour MP Joe Powell criticized the conflict of interest within the Conservative Party, emphasizing the importance of addressing issues like Ukraine’s security, Russian deterrence, and sanctions policy rather than prioritizing representation of Abramovich. Meanwhile, Abramovich has argued that the asset transfer to aid Ukraine must wait until the Jersey proceedings are concluded.

In response to the ongoing controversy, Starmer called for transparency, highlighting the potential conflict of interest if Lord Wolfson remains in the shadow cabinet. The issues raised during the parliamentary exchange centered on the allocation of funds from Chelsea Football Club to Ukraine and the need for clarity on Badenoch’s stance on the matter.

Following Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea FC and subsequent sanctions, the frozen proceeds are at the center of a legal dispute between his legal team and the UK government. Starmer has issued a warning to Abramovich, threatening legal action if the funds from the sale are not released for humanitarian purposes related to the Ukraine conflict.

A spokesperson for Badenoch clarified that Lord Wolfson no longer participates in shadow cabinet discussions and that the Jersey case is unrelated to the frozen funds issue. The Conservative Party reiterated its commitment to ensuring the prompt transfer of the £2.5 billion to Ukraine. Lord Wolfson has abstained from providing legal advice on Ukraine and Russia, with other shadow cabinet members, such as Helen Grant and Robert Jenrick, available to offer counsel on these matters.
