Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a new government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. As part of this program, the approximately 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are now required to notify consumers within 30 minutes of any changes in petrol and diesel prices. This data will be shared with third-party platforms and apps, enabling motorists to easily compare fuel prices across locations.
The goal is to eventually provide real-time updates, empowering drivers to make informed choices and potentially save significant amounts of money over time. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by a temporary scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.
The introduction of the ‘Fuel Finder’ scheme by the government will enforce strict guidelines on price transparency for all petrol stations. Non-compliant operators may face penalties of up to 1% of their annual revenue. The initiative comes in response to concerns that drivers have been overpaying for fuel, with even a small price discrepancy of 5p per liter potentially saving the average driver £2.75 per fill-up.
Edmund King, president of the motoring group AA, emphasized the long-standing issue of consumers being unaware of cheaper fuel options nearby. The AA anticipates a shift towards more transparent pricing similar to practices in other European countries. Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, expressed optimism that the initiative would foster competition among retailers, ultimately leading to better fuel prices nationwide.
Currently, the national average price for unleaded petrol is 132.1p per liter, while diesel stands at 141.2p.
