Madonna, the iconic queen of pop, has once again dominated the nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. With a total of 11 nominations, Madonna has secured the top spot, surpassing even Taylor Swift. This marks the third time in her career that Madonna has been the most nominated artist at the VMAs.
Her nominations for the upcoming ceremony next month revolve around her chart-topping album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film. Madonna’s nominations include prestigious categories such as artist of the year and video of the year.
In an intense competition, Madonna outshone Taylor Swift, who is the most awarded solo artist in VMA history. Swift received nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each with seven nominations.
Madonna has a rich history with the VMAs, having previously led the nominations in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. Her unforgettable performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she sang “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress with a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, remains a defining moment that pushed the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. The highly anticipated video of the year category will see Madonna’s “Confessions” competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
Fans have the opportunity to vote for winners in 13 of this year’s categories. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the awards ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
