Luke Donald is set to discuss the possibility of becoming the Ryder Cup captain for the third time in 2027 with DP World Tour officials in Dubai this week. Shane Lowry, the hero at Bethpage Black, has encouraged Donald to continue leading the team in Ireland.
As the former top-ranked player globally, Donald successfully guided Europe to a remarkable victory in Long Island last September, following a win in Rome in 2021. Notably, no European captain has secured three Ryder Cup victories, with only Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher achieving the feat more than twice.
Currently participating in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Donald, aged 48, will engage in conversations with DP World CEO Guy Kinnings regarding the Ryder Cup captaincy. A decision from Europe is expected in the coming months, with an announcement typically made in March.
Expressing his thoughts on the potential role, Donald stated, “I will sit down for a chat with Guy this week just to see where I am. I kinda know what the job entails but just to see what they are looking for. Just a chat. I have got a couple more months to decide.” He acknowledged the additional commitments involved, especially considering his residence in the US, which would require increased travel.
Lowry, who secured a crucial half point in New York to retain the Ryder Cup, believes that Donald is the ideal candidate for the captaincy. Lowry emphasized the significance of the decision for Donald, highlighting the rare opportunity to achieve a historic third consecutive victory as captain.
Reflecting on the support he has received from fellow players, Donald mentioned interactions with Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and Matt Fitzpatrick, who have expressed their endorsement for his potential return as captain. Vice-captains Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose are identified as potential candidates if Donald opts not to take on the role again.
