“UK Transport Secretary: Iran a Security Threat Aligned with Russia”

Politics"UK Transport Secretary: Iran a Security Threat Aligned with Russia"

The UK government has signaled a lack of sympathy towards the potential fall of the Iranian regime, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander labeling Iran as a hostile state aligned with Russia. Recent protests in Iran calling for regime change have resulted in significant casualties. Alexander emphasized the UK’s long-standing view of Iran as a security threat regionally and globally, known for its repressive treatment of its own people. She stressed the importance of quelling the violence in Iran as a current priority.

Pointing out Iran’s disruptive role, Alexander accused the country of collaborating with Vladimir Putin to circumvent oil sanctions. When asked if the UK would mourn the downfall of the Iranian government, she suggested a similar sentiment would be expressed. The Labour representative expressed the UK’s preference for a peaceful transition of power in the event of a regime change, advocating for the restoration of democratic values and freedoms in Iran.

Addressing the situation of British citizens in Iran, Alexander highlighted the limited presence of UK nationals in the country. Amid escalating tensions, Iran’s parliamentary speaker issued a warning that the US and Israel would be legitimate targets if provoked. President Donald Trump voiced support for the protesters in Iran, hinting at potential US assistance. Military options against Iran were reportedly presented to Trump, although a final decision had not been made.

In response to developments in Iran, Alexander refrained from commenting on the foreign policy or military plans of other nations but emphasized the UK’s close monitoring of the situation. She urged Iranian authorities to prioritize citizen safety, uphold fundamental freedoms, and exercise restraint in dealing with protests. The US state department issued a stern caution against underestimating President Trump’s resolve.

The ultimate decision regarding potential conflict lies with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US military affirmed its readiness to defend its interests and allies in the Middle East.
