An urgent notification has been issued to numerous Gmail users, especially if you are uncomfortable with the idea of artificial intelligence scanning your emails. The recent alert was shared online by Lori Greiner, a prominent American television personality and businesswoman.
Over the weekend, the star of Shark Tank took to Instagram to convey a message to Gmail account holders, urging them to be vigilant and share the information with their loved ones to ensure their safety. The concern revolves around Google’s new AI features, which aim to analyze emails for smart searches, contextual responses, and email summaries. Although Google states that it does not read messages for personal use, Greiner remains wary.
In her Instagram post, the celebrity emphasized the significance of the warning for Gmail users. She highlighted Google’s practice of allowing AI to scan all emails, including sensitive information like financial documents, tax details, and personal conversations, without users’ knowledge.
If this revelation raises concerns, rest assured that you can easily disable this setting. Greiner reassured that the process can be completed within 30 seconds. Simply follow these steps to deactivate AI in Gmail: navigate to Settings, select “see all settings,” locate “Smart features,” disable smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, and uncheck boxes for Workspace and other products to restrict data access for AI fully.
Google maintains that personal data is never accessed by its team or third parties and emphasizes the security of user information. The tech giant clarifies that its foundational AI models, like Gemini, are not trained on personal emails. Any access granted to Gemini in Gmail is for specific tasks and does not compromise user privacy.
Nevertheless, if the idea of AI scanning your emails unsettles you, consider disabling the smart features in Gmail.
