“Tate Modern Attacker Assaults Nurses at Broadmoor”

Updates"Tate Modern Attacker Assaults Nurses at Broadmoor"

A man who was given a life sentence for throwing a six-year-old boy off a tenth-floor balcony at the Tate Modern is facing new legal troubles for attacking two nurses at the high-security psychiatric facility where he is confined.

Jonty Bravery assaulted the nurses at Broadmoor Hospital, kicking one in the thigh and clawing at the face of another, causing her to bleed in a terrifying incident in September 2024. He was recently found guilty of these assaults on nurses Linda McKinlay and Kate Mastalerz at a trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and is awaiting sentencing.

During the trial, it was revealed that Bravery requires constant monitoring by three staff members around the clock and is housed in a room with just a mattress due to his prior violent behavior.

Bravery received a life sentence for throwing a young boy off the Tate Modern balcony, resulting in severe injuries including a brain bleed and multiple fractures. The court heard a description of the recent attack where Bravery attempted self-harm by climbing a ledge, leading to the nurses intervening to prevent harm.

Body-worn camera footage displayed in court depicted the nurses struggling with Bravery before additional staff rushed in to assist. One staff member was heard urgently calling for help during the chaotic incident.

One of the nurses, Ms. McKinlay, described the attack as the first time she had been assaulted during her extensive tenure at Broadmoor. She recounted the efforts to prevent Bravery from causing harm to himself and the injuries she sustained during the altercation.

Ms. Mastalerz, the other nurse attacked, called for help as Bravery aggressively kicked and scratched, resulting in her bruised thigh and a highly stressful situation.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring found Bravery guilty of both assault charges, remarking that he had crossed a line with his actions. This is not the first time Bravery has been violent, as he was previously jailed for attacking staff at Broadmoor Hospital in 2020.

In that incident, Bravery assaulted a nursing assistant and a rehabilitation therapist assistant, demonstrating a pattern of violent behavior towards healthcare workers.
