In a surprising turn of events, Molly, an African spurred tortoise native to the Sahara desert, was discovered meandering at a slow pace near a vast wetland in the Canadian prairie. This peculiar sighting at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake left Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the location, and her colleagues puzzled. Weighing 36 kilograms, Molly was far from her natural habitat and seemed out of place in the marsh.
After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, which they initially dismissed as mistaken observations of common snapping turtles native to Manitoba, the staff at Oak Hammock took action. A post on the iNaturalist app confirmed the presence of a tortoise, prompting a search that quickly led to Molly’s discovery.
Staff members were taken aback by the unexpected encounter. Malchuk recalled the moment when a visitor alerted them about the tortoise in the parking lot. Rushing out to investigate, they were surprised to find the massive tortoise behind them, standing out in the surroundings.
During Molly’s temporary stay at Oak Hammock, she was cared for, fed cucumbers and flower petals, and given tours around the marsh interpretive center. Eventually, her rightful owners were located through a social media post, and Molly was joyfully reunited with her family on July 22.
The family had raised Molly for 15 years since she was a baby, and it was revealed that she had escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations. Despite being familiar with tortoises’ escape tendencies, Malchuk was amazed by Molly’s journey of around 20 kilometers to the marsh.
Various theories have been proposed to explain Molly’s adventure, with some speculating that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated her to the wetland, unaware of the potential risks. The thought of Molly navigating the distance on her own adds to the mystery surrounding her unexpected appearance at Oak Hammock Marsh.
