London Marathon organizers are discussing the possibility of expanding the event to two days in 2027 to accommodate a larger number of participants. The iconic marathon, which has been a fixture in the capital since 1981, is looking to evolve with the growing interest in the race.

Traditionally held over a single day, the marathon is now considering extending the event to span an entire weekend to cater to the increasing number of runners. Plans are being put in place to make the London Marathon a two-day affair.

A spokesperson for the London Marathon stated, “The TCS London Marathon is renowned as the world’s most popular marathon, and we are constantly seeking innovative ways to allow more individuals to join while also bringing positive impacts to London.”

He further added, “Together with our partners and stakeholders, we are exploring the concept of hosting the 2027 TCS London Marathon over two days, although no formal approval has been granted yet. Our primary focus currently is on delivering an exceptional 2026 TCS London Marathon on Sunday, 26 April, ensuring a memorable experience for every participant.”

Hugh Brasher, the Chief Executive, emphasized the marathon’s global appeal, stating, “The TCS London Marathon is globally recognized as the most popular marathon, and we are continuously exploring new avenues to engage a wider audience and benefit London positively.”

He also highlighted the collaborative efforts with partners and stakeholders to successfully host the event each year in London. With just four weeks remaining until the 2026 TCS London Marathon, the anticipation is high to fulfill the marathon’s original mission of spreading joy and accomplishment in a challenging world.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London expressed eagerness to collaborate with London Marathon partners to assess the feasibility of a two-day event next year, emphasizing London’s status as a prominent sports destination.

This year’s London Marathon witnessed a record number of applicants, with 1,133,813 individuals applying through the public ballot. The event’s fundraising efforts were also exceptional, generating £87.3 million, marking a new record. The previous edition of the marathon secured a Guinness World Record for the highest number of finishers, with 56,640 participants completing the race.
