Labour MP Andrew Gwynne, who had been suspended, announced his decision to step down from the Commons. This move opens the door for the potential return of Andy Burnham to Westminster.
Gwynne, a former health minister, was removed from his ministerial position and suspended from the Labour Party last year due to offensive messages in a WhatsApp group called Trigger Me Timbers.
In a recent statement, Gwynne cited medical reasons for his resignation from the Commons. This development has sparked speculation within the Labour Party that Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham might run in the ensuing by-election, potentially challenging Keir Starmer’s leadership.
Burnham, when asked about Gwynne’s decision, expressed his focus on his role as Greater Manchester Mayor and highlighted his recent initiatives. If Burnham decides to stand in the by-election, he would require approval from Labour’s governing body, the National Executive Committee, which is seen as aligned with Starmer.
There have been concerns that Burnham could face obstacles in seeking candidacy, with warnings of it being a “democratic outrage.” Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright emphasized the importance of allowing Burnham to participate in the selection process.
When questioned about Burnham’s potential candidacy, Starmer refrained from expressing direct support but praised Burnham’s current role as Mayor of Manchester and their collaborative efforts.
Gwynne, in his statement, mentioned his prolonged health struggles during his time as an MP, exacerbated by the events of last year. He has applied to vacate his seat through an archaic procedure and anticipates a by-election. Labour has expressed readiness for a new representative in the Gorton and Denton constituency.
The party spokesperson highlighted the upcoming opportunity for residents to elect a new Labour MP committed to addressing local needs such as cost of living, NHS waiting times, and economic development.
