Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes caused the deaths of at least 11 individuals in southern Lebanon, as confirmed by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the most fatal attack since a fragile ceasefire was established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, despite ongoing assaults.
Apart from the air raids and drone strikes, residents and emergency responders in the area have accused Israeli forces of deliberately igniting wildfires that have been devastating homes, forests, and olive groves in the troubled region.
The situation has left local residents anxious about their future in the area and concerned about the possibility of hundreds of thousands of war-displaced individuals ever being able to return to their homes.
Will Christou, a correspondent for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been covering the fires and the broader Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon.
Correction: An earlier version of this episode incorrectly stated that in June 2026, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the United States, Israel, and Iran. In actuality, Israel was not part of that agreement. This error has been rectified.
