Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in her local running group beyond just a hobby—it represents the realization of a long-held aspiration. Previously residing in Iran, where women’s engagement in sports is severely limited, Jahankha now feels fortunate to be living in St. John’s and actively pursuing her dreams. The Center for Human Rights in Iran highlights the stringent dress codes imposed on Iranian female athletes for public sporting events, revealing the government’s obstruction of women’s participation in various sports. Recent reports from the BBC even detail the arrest of marathon organizers for allowing women without hijabs to take part. Jahankha, who attempted to start running in Tehran during her 20s but faced challenges due to the circumstances, now teaches in St. John’s. Encountering a running colleague rekindled her interest in the sport, leading her to join a running group on Facebook where she found a coach and beginner-friendly environment. Despite ongoing tensions resulting from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha views running as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety. Embracing it as an integral part of her life, she expresses gratitude to Canada for providing opportunities unavailable in her home country. Recently participating in a Pride race with her family, Jahankha looks forward to another 5-kilometer race on August 16, cherishing the freedom and opportunities Canada offers.
