A former member of the Reform party is facing criticism for condemning the Chagos Islands deal, despite previously advocating for a similar agreement with Joe Biden. Andrew Rosindell, in a letter to Mr. Biden in 2020, stressed the importance of addressing the Chagos situation to prevent international backlash. He expressed optimism that the US would assist in rectifying past injustices by supporting the return of the islands to Mauritius.
Over the weekend, Rosindell left the Conservative party for Reform, citing the Tories’ failure to challenge the government on the Chagos issue as a major concern. However, in December 2020, he assured President-elect Biden that US national security would not be compromised by the transfer of the islands to Mauritius.
Rosindell emphasized the need for reevaluating policies regarding the Chagos Islands, highlighting the ongoing legal disputes and the obligation to resolve them as per the International Court of Justice. He urged for political will and compromise to address the issues effectively.
In response to Rosindell’s stance, Labour MP Luke Charters criticized the hypocrisy, pointing out Rosindell’s past efforts to lobby for the Chagossian people’s rights. The UK has agreed to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius and lease back Diego Garcia for the UK-US military base for 99 years, ensuring the base’s security and operation.
The United Nations and the top court have called for the return of the islands to Mauritius, with the UK government acting to safeguard the base’s security amidst legal challenges. The recent agreement between the UK and Mauritius grants sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a move that Rosindell has characterized as a surrender.
The Mirror has reached out to Rosindell for comments, while a spokesperson for Reform UK reiterated Rosindell’s consistent support for the self-determination of the Chagossian people over the years. The spokesperson emphasized Rosindell’s belief in the Chagossians’ right to return to the islands and determine their sovereignty through a democratic process.
