Emma Raducanu Embraces Coach-Free Approach Ahead of Indian Wells

SportsEmma Raducanu Embraces Coach-Free Approach Ahead of Indian Wells

Emma Raducanu has expressed that she is not in a hurry to secure a new long-term coach following her recent split with another coach earlier this year. Raducanu ended her partnership with Francisco Roig after the Australian Open and has now adopted a different coaching approach.

Roig became Raducanu’s ninth coach and the seventh full-time official coach to depart from her team during her career. The decision to part ways with Roig, who had previously collaborated with Rafael Nadal for 18 years, stemmed from differences in opinions regarding Raducanu’s playing style.

Since January, Raducanu has been collaborating with her hitting partner Alexis Canter and is content with the current arrangement as she prepares for the Indian Wells tournament in California, where she is set to face Anastasia Zakharova in the initial round.

Despite her coach transitions, the 23-year-old is still working closely with Mark Petchey on a daily basis. However, Petchey, who is 55 years old, cannot commit full-time due to his broadcasting responsibilities with the Tennis Channel.

Raducanu expressed her current approach, stating, “Right now, it’s more about bringing my instincts back out, getting back in touch with myself.” She emphasized the importance of returning to her natural playing style, which she feels has been somewhat coached out of her.

While Raducanu remains open to the idea of having a coach, she prefers not to have one person dictate her game entirely. She values the flexibility of her current setup with Alexis and plans to seek advice from various sources when needed.

Reflecting on her experience working with Petchey at Wimbledon, Raducanu praised his influence and support, highlighting their deep conversations that have helped her both on and off the court.
