“Major Sports Organizations Unite for Men’s Mental Health”

Politics"Major Sports Organizations Unite for Men's Mental Health"

Major sports organizations, including the Premier League, are uniting to enhance mental well-being among men.

Under a new initiative spearheaded by the Government, a week-long campaign named Team Up is set to address the issue of male loneliness, encourage social connectivity, and emphasize the importance of men’s mental health. Statistics reveal that in England, one out of every four boys and young men aged 11-16 experiences feelings of loneliness occasionally, frequently, or constantly. Alarmingly, suicide ranks as one of the primary causes of death in males under 50.

The government’s Team Up campaign, scheduled to run from January 26 to February 1, 2026, nationwide, aims to address concerns that without positive environments, young men are at risk of isolation, mental health issues, and negative online influences.

Expected to back the initiative are prominent bodies such as the Premier League, EFL, Rugby Football Union, England & Wales Cricket Board, and Movember. The Government is urging elite clubs, grassroots teams, professional athletes, amateurs, and fans to participate actively in the upcoming campaign.

In light of the campaign, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated, “Many boys and young men in the country are facing challenges. They often struggle to find appropriate places and people to confide in for necessary help and support.”

She further added, “Additionally, many are being drawn into negative online spaces where they encounter content reinforcing harmful stereotypes about masculinity, leading to severe consequences.”

Highlighting the positive impact of sports, Nandy mentioned, “Sport has a distinct ability to assist in addressing these issues and making a tangible difference. It can help young men establish meaningful connections in real life, fostering camaraderie, confidence, and self-assurance. The ‘Team Up’ campaign will stress the message that everyone deserves support and a team to face life’s challenges.”

As part of the National Youth Strategy, the Government plans to invest £500 million in creating up to 250 new or renovated youth facilities. Tracy Herd, Director of Men’s Health (Europe) at Movember, expressed enthusiasm for supporting Team Up Week and collaborating with the DCMS and sports partners to emphasize the role of physical activity in bolstering young men’s mental well-being.
