A former nurse convicted of killing babies, Lucy Letby, has transitioned to a new role in prison that contrasts her previous career, potentially boosting her popularity among fellow inmates. Letby, who initially took on a cleaning job at HMP Bronzefield, has now been upgraded to a cushier position as a librarian within the facility. This move has stirred envy among other prisoners at the women-only prison, with Letby reportedly thrilled about her new responsibilities.
Celebrating her 36th birthday recently, Letby is currently serving her 15 whole-life sentences at Unit 4, a section designated for enhanced inmates, in the Surrey prison. Sources suggest that this new librarian role could enhance Letby’s standing within the prison community, as she can now cater to her acquaintances’ reading preferences, potentially making her more favored among peers.
It was disclosed that Letby swiftly attained an enhanced prisoner status just days into her incarceration, granting her additional privileges such as the opportunity to work as a librarian. Despite all inmates starting with standard status post-conviction, Letby’s quick upgrade has also entitled her to double the usual weekly visitation allowance.
Letby received 15 whole-life sentences for the murder of seven infants during her employment as a nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where she also attempted to murder seven more babies. Originally from Hereford, the now 36-year-old marked her birthday behind bars on January 4, receiving correspondence from admirers, including disturbing messages, as noted by her barrister, Mark McDonald.
McDonald conveyed to The Mirror that although Letby is receiving letters and cards from well-wishers, it serves as a stark reminder of her imprisonment and the solitary nature of spending another birthday incarcerated.
