An inquest has revealed that an 84-year-old man, identified as Robert Jobson, fatally shot his 69-year-old wife, Rosemary, at their residence in Thornton Curtis, North Lincolnshire. The couple, known for their involvement in shooting sports, were discovered deceased on July 14, 2023.
Prior to the murder, Jobson had been taken into custody following a report from his wife about an assault. The tragic incident occurred when Mrs. Jobson was shot twice upon exiting a vehicle outside their home. Subsequently, Jobson took his own life in a shed adjacent to the property.
The couple’s relationship had deteriorated, leading Rosemary to contact the authorities on June 20, 2023, expressing intentions to divorce Jobson and raising concerns about firearms in their possession. Police intervened by removing the guns from their residence.
Despite being arrested by Humberside Police on July 8, Jobson was released on bail the next day with strict conditions, including a prohibition on contacting his wife. Jobson’s mental health struggles were highlighted, prompting psychiatric evaluations post-arrest.
During the inquest at Cleethorpes Town Hall, it emerged that Jobson believed his wife was romantically involved with their friend, Peter Hrynyk, with whom she had vacationed. However, Hrynyk clarified that they were merely friends, refuting any romantic connection.
Rosemary, who had briefly stayed with Hrynyk before returning home to collect belongings, tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds to the head and neck. Meanwhile, Jobson’s cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the neck.
Coroner Jayne Wilkes characterized the case as “particularly shocking,” attributing Rosemary’s demise to the deliberate actions of her husband, labeling it as an unlawful killing with signs of premeditation.
In a heartfelt statement, Rosemary’s daughter, Paula O’Donnell, expressed deep sorrow over her mother’s tragic fate and emphasized the need for support during such challenging times.
