Returning to my former school, Ormiston Bushfield Academy in Peterborough, was a rare opportunity. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson delivered a significant speech there today. Both my younger sister and I were students at the academy and later worked there after completing our education.
The speech by Ms. Phillipson took place in the auditorium where I once attended morning assemblies and where I performed in musicals like Cats and Fame. The audience comprised Westminster journalists, my former teachers, and current students of the school.
Ms. Phillipson emphasized the transformative power of great schools and teachers in improving children’s lives. Her personal journey from a council estate to the Cabinet table inspired her to introduce a Schools White Paper aimed at revolutionizing children’s education.
Her proposed £7 billion reforms represent a groundbreaking overhaul of the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) system, focusing on inclusive support within mainstream educational settings. These changes could have greatly benefited students with extra needs, based on my experience working with them in the school.
While some parents express concerns about the potential impact of the reforms, teachers’ unions welcome the ambitious plans but worry about the sufficiency of funding for additional staff in mainstream schools. Ms. Phillipson remains confident that the Government’s broader initiatives, such as early intervention and addressing child poverty, will alleviate pressures in schools.
Reflecting on my nostalgic visit to my old school, I realized the profound influence and importance of a child’s educational environment. It highlighted the disparities in education quality across different areas in the UK. I am grateful for the exceptional education and teachers I had. Labour’s commitment to ensuring all children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds and with SEND, receive the opportunities they deserve is crucial.
