Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia have progressed in the Cincinnati Open women’s doubles tournament. They secured a victory over the fourth-seeded duo of Cristina Bucsa from Spain and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the United States with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 on Monday. The match lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time that Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up together. Their next opponents in the Round of 16 on Tuesday will be the unseeded pair from Czechia, Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova.
In another match, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani of Italy secured a victory against Tamara Korpatsch from Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith after one hour and 29 minutes of play with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday night.
Although Fernandez and Errani dominated the first set, Korpatsch and Webley-Smith made a strong comeback in the second set, even leading 6-5 and serving for the win before faltering. Fernandez and Errani showcased a strong performance with two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine unforced errors out of the 34 in the match. They are set to face Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia in the Round of 16.
Fernandez had a setback on Sunday when she was defeated by Xiyu Wang from China in the second round of the women’s singles event.
