Kayla Alexander led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds as Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team started the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a 72-57 victory over Senegal. Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb also contributed with 13 points each for Canada.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of starting with a win. Canada’s strong rebounding, especially on the offensive end where they outrebounded Senegal 15-8, played a crucial role in securing the victory. Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds were instrumental in creating extra scoring opportunities for Canada.
Swords made an impact early in the game with three three-pointers in the first quarter, helping Canada establish a lead that they maintained throughout the game. Despite Senegal’s push in the third quarter, Canada’s dominance in the paint, shooting 52.5% from that area, and their ability to capitalize on turnovers were key factors in sealing the win.
Looking ahead, Canada will have a rest day on Tuesday before taking on the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
