Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw competitions, respectively, at the recent Diamond League event in Chorzow, Poland.
Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at the Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt. She is the current Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titleholder. American DeAnna Price secured the second spot with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third place with a distance of 71.95 meters.
In the men’s hammer throw event, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the victory with an outstanding throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg now holds the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles in the discipline. Germany’s Merlin Hummel finished second with a throw of 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász secured the third position with a distance of 79.44 meters.
In the highly anticipated men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished in sixth place with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. The race was won by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville in a meeting-record time of 9.83 seconds, with Kenny Bednarek of the United States coming in second at 9.87 seconds, and Christian Coleman from the USA finishing third in 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m event saw American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden claiming victory with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia finished second in a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson from the USA, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist, settled for third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
In a surprising turn of events, American Ethan Strand secured the men’s 1,500m victory with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech finished second in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third place with a time of 3:31.16. Notably, Norwegian distance-running sensation Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished fourth. The final Diamond League meeting of the season is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, followed by the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The track and field season will culminate with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship on September 11-13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw, while Rogers, despite her impressive titles, will not compete due to the absence of the women’s hammer throw event in the championship program.
