A police officer in Saskatoon is being praised for their exceptional courage in the daring rescue of a teenage boy who was stuck in a storm drain due to fast-flowing rainwater last week. The situation was described as potentially life-threatening and extremely frightening for both the teenager and the emergency responders on the scene, according to Sean Thody, the deputy fire chief present during the incident.
The incident unfolded around 8 p.m. CST on Aug. 14 at a dog park near the 3700 block of Kinnear Avenue, as officers responded to a distress call. They discovered the young man trapped inside the storm drain, wedged against the bars of a grate by the rushing water. Thody emphasized the physical impossibility of resisting such a forceful water flow.
The initial officer at the scene entered the drain and supported the boy’s head above water until the fire department arrived to coordinate the rescue operation. Described as “organized chaos” by Thody, the rescue involved using spreaders to widen the grate and saws to cut through metal bars, creating enough space for the teen to be freed. The entire rescue operation lasted nearly two hours before the teenager was transported to the hospital.
The police commended the unnamed officer for their remarkable bravery in assisting with a potentially life-threatening situation. Meanwhile, the City of Saskatoon’s water and waste operations department revealed that four teenage boys had accessed the stormwater system through an outfall, leading to the dangerous situation when rain began to fill up the storm sewers.
Although three of the boys managed to escape, one was swept towards a covered outfall by the rushing water and became trapped. Before rescue teams arrived, the remaining teens aided in shielding their friend from the water, ensuring he could breathe. City officials urged residents to avoid venturing into city infrastructure like sewers, bridges, or electrical substations, emphasizing that only authorized personnel should access such areas due to their extreme hazards. Regular inspections are conducted on outfalls, with residents encouraged to report any compromised infrastructure to the authorities.
