“Asda Fined £500k for Selling Expired Food”

Business"Asda Fined £500k for Selling Expired Food"

Asda has been penalized with a £500,000 fine for selling expired food at one of its British supermarket outlets. The Barnsley store was found to have products, such as hummus, pizzas, and curries, that were more than two weeks past their expiration dates, with some items as old as 16 days.

Following an investigation by the Barnsley Council Trading Standards team, Asda admitted to five violations under the Food Safety Act and was directed to pay £507,767 in fines and costs on January 29. The retailer has since implemented new procedures for checking product dates in all its stores.

A spokesperson from Barnsley Trading Standards emphasized the importance of compliance with food safety regulations and the substantial fines imposed on Asda serve as a deterrent against negligence. Additionally, Cllr Wendy Cain from Barnsley Council reiterated the commitment to ensuring community safety by holding businesses accountable for selling only safe food.

In response, an Asda spokesperson expressed disappointment over the incident and acknowledged the failure to meet customer expectations. The company has taken steps to enhance date code checking processes in all Asda stores to guarantee the availability of fresh products for customers.

Recent data from market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator indicates a decrease in grocery price inflation to 4% in January, the lowest level since April. Asda’s sales were down by 3.7% compared to the previous year. The report also reveals an increase in consumer demand for high-protein and high-fiber foods, with significant rises in sales of cottage cheese, fresh fruit, dried pulses, fresh fish, poultry, and chilled yogurt.
