A young girl, aged seven, was urgently taken to the hospital after mistakenly ingesting her mother’s weight loss injection, thinking it would alleviate her stomach pain. The medication, GLP-1, also known as Ozempic or Mounjaro, is typically used to manage Type 1 diabetes and promote weight loss.
Jessa Milender, now eight years old, unintentionally self-administered 60% of a pre-filled GLP-1 injector pen, resulting in her being hospitalized and in a critical condition for several days. Jessa, from Indiana, USA, shared that she believed the medication was for stomach issues, as her mother used it for the same reason.
Upon discovering her daughter’s ingestion, Melissa promptly contacted the poison center and rushed Jessa to the hospital, where she was treated with intravenous fluids due to dehydration and vomiting.
GLP-1 functions by replicating the body’s natural hormone to reduce appetite and prolong the feeling of fullness. However, like any medication, it can lead to adverse effects such as vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.
Melissa expressed her shock at the severity of the situation, mentioning that Jessa was discharged from the hospital once her symptoms improved, only to experience a recurrence of vomiting at home. Concerned about Jessa’s deteriorating condition, Melissa brought her back to the hospital, where Jessa refrained from eating for six consecutive days, raising concerns about her kidney function.
Fortunately, Jessa eventually recovered fully. Melissa took immediate measures to prevent similar incidents by storing the medication in a locked box following the incident. Reflecting on the episode, Melissa emphasized her belief in divine protection from the worst outcomes.
In a separate incident, a 12-year-old boy required hospitalization after unknowingly consuming an excessive amount of caffeine from Tyson Fury chewing gum. Oliver Wood mistakenly ingested over 2,000mg of caffeine, equivalent to 20 cups of coffee or around 25 cans of Red Bull, leading to chest pains and jitteriness. Anne-Marie Willis, Oliver’s mother, expressed her fear of the situation, highlighting the lack of regulations regarding the sale of caffeine products to minors.
Anne-Marie disclosed that Oliver bought the gum due to its low price and association with Tyson Fury, not realizing the caffeine content. She emphasized the need for stricter regulations on selling high-caffeine products to children, citing the severity of the incident and the potential risks involved.
Both incidents underscore the importance of proper storage and awareness when it comes to medications and products containing potent ingredients, especially in households with children.
