Several NATO countries, including Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands, are deploying troops to Greenland for military exercises amid increasing concerns about potential threats from Washington and other adversaries.
Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed the substantial military buildup following reports by local media. The move is in response to heightened invasion risks from U.S. President Donald Trump and escalating Russian and Chinese aggression in the Arctic, which poses a significant challenge for NATO.
Lund Poulsen emphasized the critical importance of Arctic security for Denmark and its allies, stating the need to enhance operational capabilities in the region in collaboration with other nations. The Danish Defence Forces, along with Arctic and European allies, will conduct exercises to bolster their presence and readiness in the Arctic.
Denmark is dispatching aircraft, naval vessels, and personnel for the training drills, focusing on hosting allied forces, conducting air operations, and ensuring maritime security, as per the Ministry of Defence.
The deployment announcement comes in the wake of President Trump’s social media post asserting the United States’ National Security interest in Greenland and highlighting the strategic significance of the region in global geopolitics.
Sweden is also sending troops, including officers from its Armed Forces, to participate in the exercises in Greenland as part of the Danish-led Operation Arctic Endurance, reflecting a collaborative effort among allied nations at Denmark’s request.
France has unveiled plans to establish a consulate in Greenland as a political gesture in response to Trump’s annexation rhetoric, aiming to increase its presence in the region, particularly in scientific endeavors.
German officials have disclosed that the military operations are being coordinated in Copenhagen to bypass U.S. involvement and could commence imminently. German forces, including mountain troops, Navy, and Air Force personnel, are poised for the mission in Greenland.
Germany’s new Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft arrived in Greenland recently, underscoring the country’s commitment to safeguarding the Arctic region against external threats. German Defence Minister Boris Postorius has urged NATO to defend Greenland against growing Chinese and Russian assertiveness in the area.
Greenland’s stance on independence and opposition to any potential U.S. control is clear, reiterating that the island is not for sale, given its valuable mineral resources and strategic significance.
