The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina experienced a brief power cut just 10 minutes after the games began. The interruption occurred during the curling event, causing a temporary pause in the competition.
Prior to the official Opening Ceremony scheduled for Friday at the San Siro, some sporting events had already commenced. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling had started, but were momentarily halted due to a sudden power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.
During the disruption, British curlers Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds were in good spirits despite the unexpected delay. The lights in the venue went out while they were competing against Norway in the first end, leading to a pause in the match.
BBC commentator Steve Cram found humor in the situation, noting the power cut and the pause in play caused by the scoring screens going offline. However, the audience cheered when the lights were restored after approximately five minutes, allowing the competition to resume.
Dodds and Mouat managed to secure an 8-6 victory in their match, kicking off the round robin phase impressively. Mouat downplayed the disruption, describing it as a fun experience and praising the venue and ice quality.
Looking ahead, UK Sport aims to surpass its previous Winter Games medal record of five by targeting up to eight medals in Milano Cortina. With substantial funding from the National Lottery and government, UK Sport has invested over £32.5m for the current four-year cycle to enhance Britain’s presence in winter sports.
Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from Beijing 2022, has transitioned into a leadership role within Team GB for Milan-Cortina 2026. She expressed confidence in the team’s potential to challenge established norms despite facing challenges accessing snow and ice compared to some competitors.
