A former renowned jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained in custody on three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, currently under a 12-month racing disqualification for a previous offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Australia. The charges against him include armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a crime, and possession of dangerous drugs.
Facing the possibility of up to 14 years in prison for robbery, Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, known for his past successes with 502 wins, including three Group race victories, notably triumphed in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
Tarrant’s troubled history includes a six-month ban in 2020 for headbutting a fellow jockey and a one-year disqualification in October of the same year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding the alleged falsification of health assessment forms. Despite multiple opportunities to respond to the inquiry, Tarrant remained unresponsive, leading to the Racing Integrity Commission imposing a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025.
The Commission emphasized the importance of upholding integrity within the racing industry and the necessity for licensed individuals to cooperate fully with investigations. Stewards concluded that Tarrant’s actions warranted the imposed disqualification to maintain the integrity of the sport and ensure participant welfare.
