The United Kingdom has deployed a military official to Greenland as Denmark strengthens its military presence in the Arctic and High North, responding to repeated calls from US President Donald Trump for the US to assert dominance over the region.

Denmark’s Defence Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, revealed that multiple allied nations would participate in a joint operation, emphasizing the unpredictability of future events.

Following Denmark’s request, the UK has assigned a military officer to a reconnaissance group in preparation for an upcoming Arctic Endurance exercise, as confirmed by Downing Street.

A spokesperson stated that the move aligns with President Trump’s concerns regarding High North security, highlighting the collaborative efforts of NATO and JEF nations to enhance security in the region and deter Russian and Chinese activities.

Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France have all confirmed their involvement in the joint mission, aiming to strengthen regional security and enhance operational capabilities in the area, according to Denmark’s Ministry of Defence.

The renewed focus on security comes amid increased pressure from President Trump to secure Greenland and prevent Russia or China from gaining control over the territory, raising concerns about the stability of the transatlantic partnership.

With discussions escalating since the beginning of 2026 about the potential US acquisition of Greenland, the UK has intensified talks on Arctic defense, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaging in conversations with President Trump, Denmark’s prime minister, and NATO’s secretary-general.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s participation in the joint military exercise, Operation Arctic Endurance, in response to Denmark’s request, emphasizing their commitment by sending the first French military elements with more to follow.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has pledged to enhance Arctic security during her Scandinavian tour, emphasizing the UK’s efforts to strengthen defenses and deter potential threats to national interests and infrastructure from individuals like Vladimir Putin.

Despite disagreements over the proposed American takeover of Greenland, Danish officials agreed to establish a working group during a meeting in Washington with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
