Tragic Death of ‘Kind-Hearted’ University Student

UpdatesTragic Death of 'Kind-Hearted' University Student

A student described as ‘respectful’ and ‘kind-hearted’ went missing after a nighttime swim with friends and tragically passed away due to cold water shock, according to findings from an inquest.

Michael Oppong-Yeboah, 18, had joined a spontaneous evening swim with about ten friends from a jiu jistu society when he encountered difficulties off East Hoe beach in Plymouth in March 2024.

During the inquest at Exeter Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that the environmental science student at the University of Plymouth swam a short distance in rough waters before struggling and calling for help. He was then hit by a large wave, leading to his disappearance from sight.

The coroner determined that Michael succumbed to cold water shock, which significantly impeded his ability to swim and remain above water. His body was retrieved from the water at Devonport naval dockyard three weeks later.

Assistant coroner Ian Arrow, concluding the inquest, emphasized the dangers of entering cold and rough seas, especially at night, and urged the public to be cautious.

In an earlier tribute, Michael’s mother, Doris Kyeremaa, described him as a compassionate, gentle, and religious person who prioritized others’ happiness. She highlighted his love for children, animals, swimming, and volunteering at the Watford food bank. Michael’s academic dedication and helpful nature at home were also praised by his mother.

She fondly remembered Michael’s positive impact on those around him and expressed her hopes for his unfulfilled wishes to come true despite his untimely passing.
