A ball kid’s illness caused a delay in a match at the Australian Open as Greek player Stefano Tsitsipas competed against Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki in the tournament’s first round. Despite Mochizuki taking the first set 6-4, Tsitsipas rallied to win the second set 6-3. However, the start of the third set was interrupted when a ball kid fell ill near the court’s back, leading to a temporary halt in play for medical attention.
While the medical staff attended to the ball kid, both players, Tsitsipas and Mochizuki, waited on the sidelines. This incident occurred shortly after another match involving Naomi Osaka was suspended at the Rod Laver Arena. The commentary team from TNT Sports initially struggled to understand the reason for the interruption, causing confusion among viewers.
After the area was cleaned up, play resumed after an eight-minute delay. Tsitsipas went on to win the next two sets 6-2 each, securing a victory and advancing to face Czechia’s Tomas Machac in the following round. Unfortunately, this was not the first case of a ball kid falling ill during the tournament.
In a separate incident earlier in the week, a ball kid fainted during a match between Zeynep Sonmez and Ekaterina Alexandrova. Sonmez quickly assisted the girl, ensuring she received the necessary care before play resumed. Sonmez later shared her experience, emphasizing the importance of compassion and helping others in need.
TNT commentator Catherine Whitaker praised Sonmez’s quick response, highlighting her attentiveness to the situation and proactive assistance to the affected ball kid. This incident underscores the significance of prioritizing well-being and support for those in distress during sports events.
