If the United States does not assert authority over Greenland, President Donald Trump has stated that either Russia or China may attempt to seize the territory, emphasizing his commitment to securing Greenland.
During a meeting with oil companies interested in participating in potential operations involving Venezuelan resources, President Trump expressed his determination to acquire Greenland through diplomatic or forceful means. When questioned about financial offers to Greenlanders, he deferred discussing monetary aspects at the moment.
“We are moving forward with plans concerning Greenland, regardless of local sentiments, as failure to do so could result in Russian or Chinese occupation of the region, which is unacceptable. Ideally, we seek a peaceful resolution, but if necessary, we will resort to more assertive measures,” President Trump declared.
Furthermore, Defense Secretary John Healey has affirmed that the United Kingdom will not support any potential US military actions against Greenland, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal frameworks and treaty obligations within NATO. He ruled out the utilization of British bases, personnel, or equipment in assisting US endeavors related to Greenland.
Concerns have escalated over the possibility of US military intervention in Greenland, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioning that such actions could jeopardize the integrity of the NATO alliance. European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, have underscored the significance of respecting Greenland’s autonomy and allowing Denmark to manage its affairs independently.
In response to the escalating situation, diplomatic engagements have intensified, with discussions held between various leaders to address the need for enhanced deterrence against potential Russian aggression in the Arctic region.
