A recent discovery in northern British Columbia has sparked curiosity and intrigue as a floating island mysteriously appeared and then disappeared in the Williston Reservoir, catching the attention of B.C. Hydro and local residents.
The island, estimated to be about 70 meters wide and 140 meters long, was first noticed by Rocky Avery, who shared images and videos of the unusual sight on social media. Despite initial skepticism from B.C. Hydro due to the prevalence of generative AI technology, satellite imagery confirmed the island’s existence in the reservoir.
The island, believed to have formed over years from driftwood accumulation along the shore, was likely set adrift by rising reservoir levels. Although it vanished from satellite data by early August, B.C. Hydro continues to monitor for any reappearance.
This occurrence, while rare in the region, is a known phenomenon in dam construction, with floating islands reported in other parts of the world. B.C. Hydro encourages public reports to help monitor the reservoir, given its vast size. As the mystery of the floating island remains unsolved, the community remains cautious while navigating the waters of the Williston Reservoir.
