German authorities are currently investigating a drone discovered at Leipzig airport carrying explosives and a detonator. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to escalate retaliation against countries assisting Ukraine. Lavrov mentioned in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, that harsher measures will be taken to disrupt support for Ukraine’s military efforts.
The drone with an unknown explosive device was found in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, classified as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport for transporting armaments, ammunition, and military equipment to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo companies.
The presence of the drone, found next to a Ukrainian cargo plane, represents a heightened threat level for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. The minister stated that the incident appears to be part of a professional hybrid threat scenario rather than the work of amateurs.
While the investigation is ongoing, German authorities have not disclosed the drone’s origin. Late last week, U.S. intelligence officials suggested that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government. Berlin is taking a cautious approach, enhancing anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature attribution.
German officials warn of Russia’s utilization of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, including activities preceding upcoming regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt emphasized the continuous challenges posed by various threats, including hybrid warfare tactics targeting Germany.
In previous instances, U.S. and Western intelligence uncovered a Russian plot to assassinate the CEO of a German defense contractor involved in supplying armaments to Ukraine. Additionally, a man suspected of spying for Russia was arrested for scouting sabotage targets related to Germany’s military support for Ukraine.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russian interference in Germany online through a campaign known as Operation Overload. The campaign aims to exploit controversies within NATO member countries and Ukraine, particularly focusing on destabilizing democracies and undermining Ukraine’s war efforts.
German officials acknowledge attempts to influence politics and society through disinformation campaigns, especially during regional elections. Experts highlight Russia’s aggressive escalation of interference, such as the recent drone incident in Leipzig, testing Germany’s tolerance and potentially leading to serious consequences.
The growing use of physical tactics in hybrid warfare raises concerns about the threshold between defense and direct conflict. Experts emphasize the need to clarify boundaries and deter further escalations. Lavrov’s statements are viewed as a significant shift from past denials of Russia’s interference in Western countries, indicating a more aggressive stance towards Europe, the West, and NATO.
